This is a practical, concise introduction to what is rapidly becoming an essential tool for all critical care physicians: The Manual covers the full spectrum of conditions diagnosed using ultrasound and gives practical guidance in how to use ultrasound for common invasive procedures.

Major applications are introduced using focused diagnostic questions and reviewing the image- acquisition skills needed to answer them. Images of positive and negative findings are presented, and scanning tips for improving image quality.

The second edition has been substantially revised and expanded, with new images, updated literature reviews, new applications and clinical algorithms. New chapters cover additional procedures, musculoskeletal and pediatric applications, and the use of ultrasound in resuscitation. This text is invaluable for emergency physicians at all levels.

Vicki E. The diagnostic ultrasound section is particularly targeted at Accident and Emergency practice.

Manual of Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound

There is an excellent section on focused assessment with sonography and trauma FAST to look at limited images of the chest and abdomen in the trauma or other emergency situation.

This is followed by a short section on echocardiography, again using a focused question technique with assessment of global cardiac function and use in cardiac arrest situations.

Although these may be of less interest to those in anaesthesia and critical care, they do nevertheless provide a succinct description of basic techniques which would improve understanding in this area. Chapter 8 covers deep vein thrombosis which again would be useful for those involved in invasive procedures even if they are not setting out to look for thrombosis.

Thoracic ultrasound is covered well and has direct relevance for anaesthesia and critical care. There is a short section on ocular ultrasound used as a technique for assessing intracranial hypertension and a section on fractures with ultrasound.
